About
Ágnes Lakatos and Tibor Csuhaj-Barna are a voice and bass duo from Budapest, Hungary, who regularly perform throughout Central Europe and abroad. They will be on a U.S. tour stopping in Chicago to team up with Amos Gillespie on saxophone, Gustavo Cortinas on drums and Carl Kennedy on piano, for a performance at the Checkout on Thursday, July 2nd at 7:30PM.
They will be featuring originals and standards in a unique cross-pollination of styles where Hungarian folk intersects with the history of American jazz. “Ágnes Lakatos is one of the most defining personalities of Hungarian vocal jazz, both as a performer and teacher. The Quantum Committee Sextet blends traditional jazz with innovation and passion. Meeting in the Western Michigan jazz studies program. Jacob Nowakowski (Bass), from Bartlett Illinois, composes their original pieces while laying down the groundwork for the band. Rohan Marr (Drums) from West Chicago Illinois, and Caleb Downey (Piano) from Cadillac Michigan complete the rhythm section bringing a diversity of textures and fiery passion. Haden Bovee (Saxophone) from Middleville Michigan, Colin Woniewski (Trombone)from Byron Center Michigan, and Joji Klooster (Saxophone) from Redlands California complete the sextet, expanding its musical possibilities through their innovative solos. Quantum, being inspired largely by jazz legends such as Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, and John Coltrane seek to reflect these artists’ fire, while also bringing a refreshing originality. With the rich history of Jazz as their inspiration interspersed with their individual skills and passion for playing together, the possibilities are endless.

Echos is a program presented by playOUT! in observance of Trans Day of Remembrance created in alignment with the organization’s mission to amplify LGBTQIA+ voices in classical music through performance, commissioning, and community partnership.
Cellist J Holzen joins a guest curator for a program that brings together music and reflection shaped by themes of identity, memory, and connection. Echos creates space for multiple perspectives to coexist, inviting audiences into an experience of listening, witnessing, and presence. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Transmasc Society of Chicago.

De Ryke and Schlosberg perform Lofstrom

Voice and piano duo Ryan De Ryke and Daniel Schlosberg have been working with composer Doug Lofstrom since 2017 to record Lofstrom’s vocal music. The first selection of this was released in 2025 on the album “Myths and Accidents,” on Diversions/Divine Art Records. Tonight’s program includes works from that recording, several of Lofstrom’s new songs and selections from the American songbook featuring the duo with Lofstrom on bass.
