Duo Orchid, the award-winning piano duo of Jimmy Cheung and Angela Lau, are Hong Kong–born musicians based in San Antonio, Texas. Musical performance by bw3. bw3 is the brainchild of trombonist and electronic artist Brendan Whalen. After moving to Chicago in 2015 to study music with some of the city’s finest musicians, the 29-year-old transplant became frustrated with the boundaries of traditional music and has made it a mission to break them down ever since. Fusing jazz, hip hop, and funk with ambient, electronic, and hard rock, bw3 has something for everybody and never fails to create a unique sonic experience.

Ágnes Lakatos and Tibor Csuhaj-Barna are a voice and bass duo from Budapest, Hungary, who regularly perform throughout Central Europe and abroad. They will be on a U.S. tour stopping in Chicago to team up with Amos Gillespie on saxophone, Gustavo Cortinas on drums and Carl Kennedy on piano, for a performance at the Checkout on Thursday, July 2nd at 7:30PM.
They will be featuring originals and standards in a unique cross-pollination of styles where Hungarian folk intersects with the history of American jazz. “Ágnes Lakatos is one of the most defining personalities of Hungarian vocal jazz, both as a performer and teacher.
